The FTTH Awards are special and prestigious prizes. During this ceremony, three awards will be presented to recognise outstanding support to the acceleration of FTTH in Europe. -The Individual Award honours a single person for their unique efforts to make FTTH happen in Europe. -The Operator Award acknowledges an operator company that has significantly contributed to the development and roll-out of FTTH in Europe. -The Charles Kao Award was established in 2019 by the FTTH Council Europe in honour of fibre pioneer Professor Sir Charles Kuen Kao who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for "ground-breaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication”. This award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding life-long achievement and contribution to promoting full-fibre connectivity (globally, but particularly in Europe).
The names of the winners of the FTTH Council Europe Awards 2020 and the Charles Kao Award will be announced directly during the ceremony.

Despite all cherry-picking and land-grabbing, there is still a huge need for fibre investments, notably in rural areas. And it is the Altnets which seem to be well-positioned for that. Given the CAPEX intense nature of the business model, securing financing is crucial to realize projects. When assessing fibre transactions, banks are focusing on the key: the take-up from the end-users. But are the people willing to pay enough? A survey on that launched by Hamburg Commercial Bank with the University of Bremen will be presented and discussed during this panel.

The FTTH/5G convergence study released by the FTTH Council Europe in 2019 revealed that an optimally converged network for FTTH and 5G could eliminate between 65% and 96% of the cost of a standalone fibre network for 5G. In this session, the FTTH Council Europe will release an update to last year's study considering the realistic scenario of deploying an FTTH Network first, intended to be 5G ready, but without knowing the exact future locations and fibre needs for the 5G network. The panellist will debate the takeaways of this second study and discuss the benefits of network convergence for fibre and 5G rollout plans.

EU Member States are due to implement the European Electronic Communications Code by 21 December 2020, but only few are likely to meet the deadline. The Code, which provides a new regulatory framework updating European telecoms rules, promotes investment in full fibre networks. Given the importance of the Directive for the European telecommunications sector, it is necessary to examine the various implementation challenges encountered in numerous Member States and to discuss the potential opportunities ahead for fibre providers and policy makers to achieve accelerated fibre deployment.
