Workshop 3a Gigabit networks ‘Made in Germany’: accelerating FTTH design & deployment
Organised by GE, Comsof, Prysmian Group and ISTools
Germany is preparing for a huge acceleration of FTTH deployments when concerns over the environment are greater than ever before. For this to become a success, every aspect of network design, deployment and management needs to be considered. Join Comsof, GE, IS Tools and Prysmian to hear about:

The Internet has become the most commonly used communication medium in people’s lives. Key the Internet are broadband access networks. These networks use different technologies, e.g. DSL or DOCSIS, and different infrastructures, such as telephony or hybrid fibre-coax networks. To meet ever increasing demands FTTH has been widely adopted. This state-of-the-art technology provides data rates of hundreds Gigabit\second. The technology continuously improves, with quality, durability and energy consumption being key focus points. Therefore cable and technology choice are critical when considering increasing density, reducing carbon emission and reducing cost to the customer for next generation network infrastructure in Germany.

In 2017 DT embarked upon an entirely new FTTH deployment project to aggressively deploy FTTH across Germany. The objective was to do this as cost effectively and efficiently as possible, tearing up the old rule book and using modern technologies in planning, design and construction. All delivered collaboratively through an agile methodology. The project uses 360° panoramic imagery and LiDAR to capture the real world processed using AI to identify optimal trench routes. Then high level and low-level network designs are fully automated to create an optimised, constructible design, without the need for multiple field visits. Last year this cutting-edge project was awarded DT’s Innovation Award, beating numerous other projects to the prestigious title

Germany is in a favourable position to benefit from lessons learned during the early projects in Europe that began more than 10 years ago. Materials, processes, staff training, software tools, etc. has truly evolved over time. Implementing suitable best practices ensures that large investments are used efficiently. In this session, we share examples of general and Germany specific challenges (e.g. Genehmigung, GEE) and how these can be addressed. E.g. how a fully digitized process all the way from the work in trenches to KPI dashboards in the project office can automate workflows, ensure control and increase the roll-out speed.
